GB5HQ - 160m SSB - 2005

Chris G3SVL, David G3UEG and Mark G4AXX - Dunmow, Essex.

For 2005 the GB5HQ 160m SSB station was moved up from the Sussex Coast (G3SVL) to Essex. Dave G3UEG leases a farmer's field near Dunmow in Essex and has a Titanex vertical for 160m which is normally 108ft high with an excellent radial system under it. However, for this contest a vertical would not be suitable so an inverted V was put up at 75ft. The balanced wire feed system can be seen in the photos below as can the K9AY receiving antenna. In the shack there were a pair of FT1000's and an ACOM linear. The computer set up comprised two laptops independently connected via ISDN to the StarLog server - it worked faultlessly for the full 24 hours.
Ready for the off. Run station on the left and Spot station on the right (and yes, we did switch it on for the contest!) Inverted V dipole at 75ft with balanced feeder back to the shack and K9AY receive antenna in the foreground.

Low loss : 300ft of balanced feeder minimize the losses.
